Annecy and the French Alps Lakes: A Luxury Travel Guide

Annecy is the best base in the French Alps for a first visit: a canal-laced old town on the edge of a clear mountain lake, about 45 minutes by road from Geneva airport and under four hours from Paris by direct TGV.12 Plan three to four nights around Lake Annecy, add a day trip to Chamonix or Lac du Bourget, and go in June, September or early December for the best balance of weather, access and atmosphere.

When I plan trips for clients at France Awaits Travel, Annecy is where I send people who love the idea of the Alps but do not want a ski-resort itinerary. It works for honeymooners, multigenerational families and anyone who wants lake swimming, long lunches and a mountain view without giving up comfort. Here is how I shape the trip.

What Is There to See in Annecy's Old Town?

The old town (Vieille Ville) is compact and walkable, built around the Thiou canal. Give it a relaxed half day, ideally early, before the day-trip crowds arrive.

Palais de l'Île and the canals

The Palais de l'Île, the wedge-shaped stone building that sits in the middle of the canal, is the postcard image of Annecy. It has served several roles over the centuries and was a prison for centuries; one account records it as a prison from at least 1325 until 1864.3 Today it is a small history museum. Sources date its oldest parts differently, so I tell clients simply that it is medieval. Visit the interior for the history, but save your photography for the Pont des Amours and the quai side views at golden hour.

The Tuesday, Friday and Sunday market

The old town market runs on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, year-round, roughly 7 am to 1 pm, along Rue Sainte-Claire.4 Tuesday is mostly food and the calmest; Friday and Sunday are larger and add non-food stalls. Go before 10 am, buy a wedge of Reblochon, a few Savoie charcuterie slices and some bread, and picnic by the lake. Check the tourist office for holiday-week changes.

What Should You Do at Lake Annecy?

The lake is the reason to stay several nights. It is long, narrow and ringed by mountains, and locals take pride in its clarity.

Boat cruises and swimming

Lake cruises depart from the quai near the old town, with commentary cruises and ferries to lakeside villages such as Talloires and Menthon-Saint-Bernard running from spring into autumn. I could not find a confirmed 2026-27 timetable, so check the operator's site (bateaux-annecy.com) when you plan.5 For a private feel, I arrange a chauffeured electric or classic wooden boat for a half day, with a swim stop and a lunch booked at a lakeside table. Swimming is a July and August pleasure; the water is cold and the public beaches fill up on weekends.

Cycling the voie verte

A paved, largely traffic-free cycle route follows the lake. Guides quote the full loop at around 40 km, and most riders take four to five hours with stops.6 Be aware that one stretch near Menthon-Saint-Bernard has historically shared the road with traffic, so riders should check current conditions. Most visitors rent e-bikes in town and ride one side, then take a ferry back. It is an easy, scenic way to see Talloires and Duingt.

Talloires and Menthon-Saint-Bernard

Talloires, on the east shore, is where I send clients who want a lakeside retreat: a harbor, a handful of excellent restaurants and a quiet promenade. Menthon-Saint-Bernard, a few minutes along the shore, has a hilltop medieval château that hosts a conference series and, from mid-November, a Christmas event for families.7 Visiting hours change by season, so confirm before you go.

Paragliding from Col de la Forclaz

The tandem paragliding flights above the lake launch from the Col de la Forclaz, at around 1,240 meters, and land near Doussard.8 Prices for short tandem flights start around 85 to 100 euros, and the season is generally spring to early autumn, weather permitting. Even if you do not fly, drive up for the view. Le Semnoz, the mountain above the lake's western side, offers walks and a gentler viewpoint.

When Do Annecy's Christmas Market and Winter Lights Run?

Annecy's main Christmas market is provisionally listed for 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with close to 200 chalets and an ice rink, but the tourism board says dates can shift by about a week depending on snow.9 A one-day World Christmas Market is also listed at Le Météore on Saturday 12 December 2026. I treat these as plans to confirm closer to travel. If Christmas markets are your focus, pair them with Alsace using my guide to the Alsace Christmas markets, and see my best time to visit France guide for the wider seasonal picture.

What Are the Best Day Trips From Annecy?

Chamonix and the Aiguille du Midi

Chamonix is roughly 100 km from Annecy, about an hour to an hour and a quarter by car in good conditions. The cable car to the Aiguille du Midi is the headline, and it closes for scheduled maintenance. For 2026 the operator listed closures from 11 to 29 May and from 28 September to 16 October.10 I found no published 2027 schedule, but a similar spring and autumn pattern is likely, so build your dates around it and keep a flexible day. Book timed tickets early in summer, bring layers, and expect thin air and cold temperatures at 3,800 meters even in July.

Lac du Bourget and Aix-les-Bains

For a calmer alternative, Lac du Bourget is widely described as the largest natural lake entirely in France, with the spa town of Aix-les-Bains on its eastern shore and the Abbaye de Hautecombe on the western shore.11 It suits a slow day of a boat trip and lunch, and it pairs well with a wine-focused detour; my Rhône Valley wine guide covers the area to the south.

Megève and Geneva

Megève, a polished Alpine village with a largely pedestrian center about an hour from Annecy, is lovely for lunch and shopping in any season, and it makes a sensible stop on the way to Chamonix. Geneva is your gateway city, with its own lakeside promenade and fine dining, and it is easy to add a night on arrival or departure.

What Should You Eat in the French Alps?

Savoyard cooking is mountain food, hearty and cheese-led. Expect tartiflette (potatoes, bacon, onions and Reblochon baked together), fondue savoyarde (usually Beaufort, Comté and Emmental), raclette and crozets. Writers disagree on how old tartiflette really is, and several credit the Reblochon trade body with popularizing it in the late twentieth century, but it is a fixture on every Alpine menu.12 On the lake, order omble chevalier (Arctic char) or perch (filets de perche), both lake-fish staples. Savoie wines such as Apremont, Roussette and Mondeuse are excellent and underrated. For more on how to order and behave at the table, see my guide to French food etiquette.

Where Should You Stay for a Luxury Trip?

I recommend splitting your time between the town and the lakeshore if you have four nights.

  • Les Trésoms, Lake and Spa Resort (Annecy): on the water near the old town, with a spa and restaurant. I found no 2026 closure dates, but I advise confirming directly.
  • L'Abbaye de Talloires (Talloires): a former Benedictine priory on the lakeshore, listed as open daily from 6 February to 15 November 2026, so it closes for the winter.13
  • Auberge du Père Bise, Jean Sulpice (Talloires): a long-established lakeside inn and restaurant, listed as open from 12 February to 15 December 2026.14

Opening seasons for the Talloires properties matter if you travel around Christmas. They close for part of the winter, so December and early January trips are better based at Les Trésoms or in town. I cannot vouch for rates, so I price these during planning with each property.

How Do You Get to Annecy and How Long Should You Stay?

By air: Fly into Geneva. The drive to Annecy is generally quoted at 35 to 60 minutes depending on traffic and your destination, with a private transfer typically around 40 to 45 minutes.2 Public transport is far slower, so I book a private driver for clients.

By train: Direct TGV services run from Paris Gare de Lyon in roughly 3 hours 35 to 50 minutes, depending on the train.1 Book early for the best fares. For more on booking and seat strategy, see my French train travel tips.

How many nights: Three nights is the minimum for the old town, one lake day and one day trip. Four to five nights lets you add Chamonix, a boat day and a long lunch without rushing. It also makes an elegant extension to a trip that begins in Paris; see my perfect week in Paris.

Summer or winter? Summer (June to early September) is for swimming, hiking and cycling and is also the busiest and priciest. June and September are my favorites. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with the Christmas market and nearby ski villages, but some lakeside hotels close and boat services are reduced. Pack layers whatever the season; my packing guide for France has a seasonal checklist.

Is Annecy Good for Families and Honeymoons?

Yes to both. Families do well with swimming beaches, the cycle path, short boat rides and Chamonix's lower cable car stops; see my France with kids planning guide. Couples can pair a Talloires lakeside stay with a private boat and a candlelit dinner; I fold it into trips in my France honeymoon planning guide. If you are also considering Italy's lakes, my sister site covers Lake Garda.

If you would like Annecy and the Alps built into a France itinerary, with the right hotels, drivers and a table at the right lakeside restaurant, plan your trip with me and I will take care of the details.
